Langson Library Check Out Desk Assistant

Access & Operations:

Access & Operations is responsible for the opening, closing, and security of our three buildings on the main campus. We perform general maintenance and some custodial services. We coordinate with campus entities and outside contractors, manage space projects, and provide support for library events. In addition, we are responsible for stacks management, reserves, printing services, equipment circulation, and the circulation desks. We facilitate access to the educational and research resources needed by our users through our Interlibrary Loan and Scanning services and provide multimedia expertise, services, and content at the Multimedia Resources Center (MRC). We take pride in being the faces of the libraries for people who visit in person to use our spaces and services and strive to provide a welcoming and inclusive experience.

Job Description

  • The Check Out Desk Student Assistant plays a key role in front-line library operations by supporting access, circulation services, and patron assistance at Langson Library. This position helps ensure that library policies and procedures are followed while providing a welcoming, informative, and supportive environment for all users. Student assistants serve as a central point of contact, helping patrons navigate the library, access resources, and locate services efficiently.

    Expected Responsibilities include:
    -Supporting library access by monitoring entry points and ensuring compliance with library policies and procedures
    -Assisting patrons with Express Checkout equipment and self-service circulation tools
    -Checking library materials in and out using the library management system, including creating records when needed
    -Processing holds, recalls, and item searches
    -Routing returned materials to appropriate locations
    -Updating and activating patron records
    -Answering general, directional, and service-related questions in person and over the phone
    -Providing wayfinding assistance and referrals to appropriate library departments or services
    -Performing filing and basic recordkeeping tasks
    -Collecting and recording basic statistics related to patron interactions and services provided
    -Reviewing training materials and following established Check Out Desk procedures
    -Reading and responding to email updates related to front desk operations

    Minimum Requirements and Skills:
    -Ability to multitask and maintain accuracy in a busy public service environment
    -Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills
    -General knowledge of library operations or willingness to learn
    -Basic knowledge of alphabetical and numerical filing systems
    -General computer skills, including typing and use of office software
    -Ability to work independently with minimal supervision after training
    -Ability to exercise sound judgment when applying policies and assisting patrons
