Freshman Summer Success Program (FSSP) Peer Mentor
The FSSP Peer Mentor is a live-in student staff member of the Student Success Initiatives Staff. The primary responsibilities include: to develop a sense of community for all FSSP residents; to counsel and advise residents; to mediate conflicts; to oversee roommate agreements, and fulfill administrative duties. In addition, FSSP PM will provide individual, small, and large group support to program participants through planned events and intentional interactions and are responsible to help plan and facilitate various aspects of the Freshmen Summer Success Program related events such as: workshop and social planning, event setup and breakdown, staffing, facilitating surveys.
Responsibilities begin with training on July 20, 2026, and end by September 25, 2026. All staff must participate in mandatory team training (see dates below) to ensure consistent knowledge of campus resources, program goals, and operations. FSSP Peer Mentors will be required to complete up to 20 hours of administrative/office work and training until the start of the FSSP program.
ELIGIBILITY & EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Supervisor: SSI Counselor/Coordinator
Compensation: $16.90 hourly, room in assigned Residential community, and meal allotment at assigned dining hall during hours of operation
Live-on Requirement: Required to live in an assigned-on campus residential community during summer employment period.
Room & board is only provided from July 20, 2026-September 11, 2026. Additional in-person responsibilities will take place from September 16, 2026- September 23, 2026 during which period, FSSP PMs will be responsible for their own housing and meals. FSSP PMs who have academic year UCI Student Housing Contracts may apply for transitional housing in August (nightly rates apply and will be billed by Student Housing).
Hours: 10-20 hours per week
Weekend/Evening Hours: Some weekend and evening hours will be required for duty and FSSP programs/ events.
Position Location: Onsite at assigned residential community and Student Success Initiatives Office
Dates: July 20, 2026- September 25, 2026
Training Periods:
- All training periods are mandatory. Attend and actively participate in all mandatory trainings
- FSSP Training: July 20, 2026-July 24, 2026 (paid hourly)
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Must have completed 1 year of college at UCI prior to starting the position or be a transfer student to be eligible.
- Candidates must demonstrate good academic standing and hold a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.
- Commit to position for the entire employment period.
- Adhere to all Student Success Initiatives, Student Conference and Event Services, Student Housing and UCI policies and procedures.
- Must be able to provide support to and interact with all individuals in the community as defined by the job description.
- Must be a current UCI student.
- Must pass a background check.
- Must provide proof of eligibility to work in the U.S.
- CA Drivers License preferred
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Program Implementation & Operations
- Assist in the implementation of the FSSP program
- Ensure the program objectives are being maintained and oversee the safety and well-being of participants in the program; keep track of student attendance
- Work collaboratively with the FSSP team to plan, develop, and implement weekly programs with the residents that align with the summer bridge curriculum.
- Assist the professional and other student staff in meeting the needs of the community.
Student Engagement & Mentorship
- Maintains regular contact with assigned mentees and floor residents
- Serve as a role model and mentor to participants
- Complete at least one (1) in-person 30 minute check-in with your 20-25 assigned Summer Bridge participants
- Hold designated office hours and make yourself available to Summer Bridge and Explore participants both in-person and virtually
- Support residents in their personal growth by assisting them to develop skills in such areas as problem-solving, interpersonal communication, and conflict resolution
- Be sensitive to the needs, concerns and problems of the residents
- Make appropriate referrals to campus resources and staff persons
- Refer residents to resources when appropriate
- Assistance in navigating the UCI campus; may provide modified campus tours
Community Development & Inclusion
- Facilitate the creation of roommate agreements at the beginning of the program
- Guide students in establishing shared expectations around cleanliness, quiet hours, communication, and boundaries
- Mediate roommate conflicts using restorative and problem-solving approaches
- Conduct community/floor meetings
- Work cooperatively with students to create an environment that respects the rights of others and promotes consideration of individual needs in a group living environment
- Promote the respect and integrity of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, gender, sexual orientation, and all other differences within the community
- Encourage positive interaction between residents
- Encourage and support participation in various complex and University events
Programming & Educational Support
- Coordinate recreational activities and supervise residential and extracurricular activities with a team
- Weekly attendance to assigned events or workshops as outlined by supervisors
- Host one weekend program over the duration of the program. And support fellow staff with their weekend programs
- Assist with university studies course by facilitating engaging educational activities, leading group discussions, and supporting interactive learning experiences that reinforce course objectives
Policy, Safety & Accountability
- Be on full-time during designated work hours
- Uphold the program rules/policies in the residence halls and on UCI premises and scheduled field trips
- Take appropriate actions in emergency situations and contact appropriate staff in case of an emergency
- Get approval and inform supervisors in advance of any extended absence from campus (3 consecutive nights or more)
- Maintain confidentiality
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist staff with disseminating and collecting all necessary paperwork and materials
- Provide assistance during move-in and move-out days
- Complete various administrative tasks accurately, completely and promptly (such as weekly reports, information reports, evaluations, maintenance requests, etc.).
- Attend FSSP staff meetings held on Wednesdays 3pm-5pm starting July 20, 2026- September 23, 2026.
- Participate in required staff activities.
Communication & Outreach
- Pre-program outreach to students welcoming them to UCI and Freshman Summer Success Program
- Support program communication efforts through approved social media channels
- Create engaging social media content (photos, short videos, captions, highlights) that showcases the program, residential life, and student experiences, in alignment with FSSP guidelines
OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED
Outside Employment and Activities
- FSSP Peer Mentors are not allowed to hold other employment, extra-curricular, or co-curricular activity outside of Peer Mentor role during the program duration, without prior approval from the supervisor in advance.
- FSSP Peer Mentors may not participate in any outside work or activities during important program events including: move-in, orientation, training, Welcome Week and closing periods. Exceptions must be appropriate and approved by the supervisor in advance.
- FSSP Peer Mentors must avoid conflict of interest situations because of employment or extracurricular activities.

- Single occupancy room and meal allotment
- $16.90 per hour 10-20 hours per week, beginning July 20, 2026
- 2 hours will be dedicated to weekly staff meeting
- Complete other duties as assigned.
