Prototyping Lab Assistant
UCI Beall Applied Innovation (BAI) serves as the “front door” for industry collaboration with UCI; a one-stop shop for outside entrepreneurs seeking access to university inventions and talent, large corporations looking to tap the school’s research capabilities, and investors who want to invest in promising new companies. Here at BAI, we combine discovery, prototyping, funding, incubation, and acceleration under 100,000 sq. ft. of collaborative work and event space to investors, entrepreneurs, accelerators, and incubators. Student Workers will focus largely on assisting the Lab Manager in training users and providing them with assistance in operating rapid prototyping equipment, such as 3D printers (FDM & SLA), CNCs, and laser cutters/engravers. Also, Student Workers are expected to follow and enforce all safety guidelines in operating the equipment. Other duties include maintaining consumable item inventories, ensuring lab cleanliness, and making sure all equipment is operational.
Requirements
Student Workers must be comfortable with working independently and handling technical problems using well-developed guidelines. Applicants must demonstrate:
• General understanding of additive/subtractive prototyping techniques, polymer
material properties, optics, and safe laboratory practices
• Familiarity with machining equipment, hand tools, and electronics assembly/test
equipment
• Experience with 3D printing and 3D modeling software is preferred
• Proficiency with AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks is preferred
• Ability to address technical problems
• Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills

Student Workers will have the opportunity to work in a professional environment consisting of various startups, entrepreneurs, investors, executive leaders, and other professionals.
The student worker will also have the opportunity to learn how to operate the equipment in the lab including laser printers, resin printers, 3D printers, CNC router etc.
