The Paul Merage School of Business at UC Irvine offers three dynamic MBA programs – plus PhD, specialty masters and undergraduate business degrees – that prepare business leaders for our digitally driven world. The Research Assistant (RA) will support a study to better understand the value of open source software based on company usage information of open-source software package. The Harvard Business School working paper version (available here: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4693148) of this study has received global attention and to prepare this work for submission to a journal we need assistance with finalizing the study. As such, the RA will assist with providing figures and tables for a final version of the manuscript by going through large-scale data on open source software packages. This position is advertised for a quarter (with the possibility of extension).

Position Summary

• Prepare empirical datasets
• Data linkage of large-scale datasets 
• Create tables and figures with statistics from these datasets

Required Qualifications

• B.Sc. in Data Science, Information Systems, Economics, Computer Science (or related field)
• Ability to work within a remote cluster environment (e.g. Linux OS)
• Highly responsive and quick to solve problems.
• Experience working with large-scale data
• Experience with scripting languages for data transformation and analysis (e.g. Python, SQL, R)
• Ability to provide work at specified deadlines, clearly document work

Preferred Qualifications

• Adv. degree (M.Sc. or higher) in Data Science, Information Systems, Economics, Computer Science (or related)
• Understanding of Economics and market structures, such as. competitive/non-competitive environments 
• Advanced knowledge in Python, SQL, R, Latex
• Experience using APIs to pull data and cloning repositories and extract data
• Work experience as a data scientist (in open source software or related data science work)
