VR Lab Assistant
About this Job:
The VR Lab, located within the Program in Global Languages and Cultures (GLC) at UC Irvine, supports students and faculty in using immersive technologies for language learning, cultural inquiry, and inclusive instruction. For the 2025–2026 academic year, we are seeking Lab Assistants with intermediate to advanced experience in virtual reality, Unity or basic game design, and a demonstrated interest in technology-enhanced teaching and learning.
Lab Assistants will work closely with the Lab Director to support one VR-integrated undergraduate course, offer tutoring and open lab consultation hours, and contribute to the maintenance and promotion of the Lab. Successful candidates should be prepared to assist with both technical troubleshooting and instructional facilitation in classroom and lab settings.
Applicants must:
- Have an accepted work-study award for the 2025-2026 academic year. Applicants are required to provide proof of an accepted work-study award with their application.
- Be available to work 4-10 hours per week, including some instructional or tutoring shifts (Lab Assistants do not work during finals week).
- Have a minimum GPA of 2.8 and be in good academic standing.
- Demonstrate working knowledge of Unity, game design principles, or VR development workflows.
- Be comfortable working with both faculty and students in instructional settings.
- Be punctual, reliable, and able to manage time independently.
- Show strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in explaining technical tools to non-expert users.
- Express interest in the educational applications of VR and digital storytelling.
Preferred qualifications:
- Coursework or experience in VR/AR design, Unity, game studies, or humanities-based digital media.
- Familiarity with VR hardware such as Meta Quest headsets, and ability to troubleshoot common issues.
- Experience as a peer tutor, learning assistant, or instructional support staff.
- Interest in language learning, cross-cultural communication, or digital pedagogy.

Sample Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist in facilitating one VR-enhanced undergraduate course (e.g., helping students onboard VR tools, supporting in-class activities, guiding student projects).
- Offer tutoring or open lab support hours for students working on VR or interactive assignments.
- Maintain VR equipment and manage lab reservations, scheduling, and sanitation.
- Provide tech support for Meta Quest headsets and related software.
- Help develop instructional resources, workshop guides, or simple user documentation.
- Contribute to Lab outreach via social media, flyers, and community events.
- Attend team trainings and provide feedback to improve lab processes and student support.
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
