Intercollegiate Athletics Sports Broadcast Crew
Sports Broadcast Crew members will be a part of a student-led team bringing UC Irvine Athletics to ESPN+ and other web streaming platforms. We stream multiple sports which include soccer, volleyball, water polo, basketball, and baseball. The sports seasons are linear with the school year, so there will be events during the Fall/Winter/Spring quarter (i.e., August thru May). Students will be trained in various roles throughout the productions such as the following:
- Camera operation, instant replay, video playback, computer graphics, technical directing, directing, producing, audio mixing, utility, etc.
Although preferred but not required, crew members should be well rounded in technical operations and knowledge of sports production. Also, background knowledge of sports does aid in the overall production efforts. However, it's imperative that individuals can function well in a team environment and are always communicating.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Overall execution of a sports broadcast, including cameras, audio,
graphics on screen, video playback, instant replay of live action,
interaction with play by play talent, etc. - Set up & break down, along with operation of cameras to cover games from multiple angles
- Set up microphones to capture live audio, and broadcaster headsets for
talent - General knowledge of video switchers, control panels, routers, instant
replay machines, audio mixers, and video monitors & conversions - General knowledge of the sport being played, including research of
players, matchup history, statistics, etc.
General Requirements
- Must be able to work early morning, evenings, late nights, weekends,
quarter breaks, and holidays. Also, must be able to maintain a flexible
schedule by working until the conclusion of Athletics games events,
occasionally working beyond scheduled hours (i.e., some events are timed while others vary based game action). - Shifts are also subject to cancellation, and/or changes as needed and directed by supervisor.
- Must be able to work a minimum of fifteen (8-20) hours per week on a
variable schedule to accommodate event needs, once live events
resume - Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and adapt to changes on the fly.
